Common Gallbladder Issues and Symptoms
The gallbladder stores bile produced by the liver, aiding in the digestion of fats. When infection or health concerns inhibit its proper function, it is typically removed. Sometimes it is compared to the appendix in its level of usefulness. Taking it out of the body will not reduce the quality of life, but without specific health issues, there’s no reason to remove it.
Common Issues and Their Symptoms
Dr. Zhen Fan performs gallbladder removal surgery when patients have the following issues diagnosed:
Gallstones (Cholelithiasis) – Digestive fluid can crystallize and form small ‘stones’ in the gallbladder. These can range in size and number and can inflict pain in the abdomen, back, and right shoulder. Nausea and vomiting are also symptoms. In most cases, these are harmless material buildups that are painful for a few moments and pass on.
Gallbladder Inflammation (Cholecystitis) - When a gallstone blocks the neck of the gallbladder, it can cause severe inflammation, which leads to significant pain and a high fever. Bile or infection build up, requiring immediate treatment.
Bile Duct Blockage (Biliary Obstruction) - Bile flows from your gallbladder and liver to your small intestine. If a gallstone blocks the gallbladder duct and bile builds up within, it could cause jaundice or a severe infection. Jaundice is a yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes, occurring as a result of excess bile in the body.
Blockage of the Pancreatic Duct (Gallstone Pancreatitis) - Pancreatic juices flow through the pancreatic duct to aid in digestion. If a gallstone blocks the pancreatic duct, it could lead to pancreatitis, causing infection and constant abdominal pain.
How Can I Get the Gallbladder Care I Need?
If you experience the above, contact your doctor immediately. They will instruct you in ways to reduce discomfort. During the examination, they will diagnose the direct source of the concern through tests, and then create a treatment plan for getting you back to health. The next step will be referring you to a surgeon for care, a specialist you can research and select, in some cases.
